The brief:
The amount of loft insulation required by UK law is increasing. Design an easy-to-install system which allows the increase of loft insulation in UK homes without compromising storage space.

Taking pictures of and entering lofts was an important step to visualise concepts in use.

Materials

Understanding plastics is an important step when designing a load-bearing product.

The design:
Working from initial sketches, the concept of effectively raising existing loft beams was generated. This idea was developed through the use of CAD and small, basic models to ensure the design stacked efficiently, fitted together seamlessly and could be manufactured at scale.

Cutting

Adding these cuts to the product reduces weight, saves material and allows the user to see how much insulation is inside.

Finished Prototype

The tessellation used on this prototype allows easy and efficient stacking in B&Q vans and shipping containers.

The prototype:
Using cardboard, I constructed a full-size working prototype to test fitment through loft openings, joining together of units and real-world practicality.

The final design significantly exceeded the current 270mm loft insulation depth requirement, whilst being easy to install, cheap to produce and easy to transport.
